Moving Tips
Moving doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here are our top tips from years of helping Joliet families and businesses relocate smoothly.
1. Start Packing Early
Begin packing non-essential items 4β6 weeks before your move. Start with seasonal items, books, and dΓ©cor. Leave everyday essentials for the last few days.
2. Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the perfect time to get rid of things you don't need. Donate, sell, or toss anything you haven't used in a year. Less stuff = lower moving costs.
3. Label Every Box
Label each box with the room it belongs in AND a brief description of contents. This saves hours of confusion on moving day and makes unpacking much faster.
4. Pack Heavy Items in Small Boxes
Books, tools, and canned goods should go in small boxes. Large boxes should be reserved for light items like pillows, linens, and lampshades.
5. Take Photos of Electronics
Before unplugging your TV, gaming setup, or home office, photograph all the cable connections. You'll thank yourself when setting everything back up.
6. Pack an Essentials Box
Pack a separate box with everything you'll need the first night: phone charger, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, and important documents. Keep this with you β not on the truck.
7. Notify Important Parties Early
Update your address with USPS, your bank, employer, insurance, subscriptions, and the DMV at least 2 weeks before your move date.
8. Protect Your Floors
Ask your movers about floor protection. We use moving blankets and floor runners to prevent scratches and scuffs during the move.
9. Reserve Parking in Advance
In Joliet and especially in Chicago, parking for a moving truck can be tricky. Reserve a spot or get a parking permit from the city ahead of time.
10. Hire Movers Early
The best moving companies book up fast β especially on weekends and at the end of the month. Book at least 2β3 weeks in advance to get your preferred date.
